Teaching Children Sustainability And Environmental Care
We clearly need to take responsibility and try to live in a more sustainable manner for the sake of future generations. It is our children who will be the environmental stewards of the future so we need to instill in them those values. So how can we do it?
Begin a Crafty Project Using Recycled Items
A very easy and creative way to teach kids environmental stewardship is through craft projects you can do together. Kids learn much better through involvement, especially with Mom or Dad.
Allow them to put their own creative signs as labels on your recycling bins. Explore "what goes with what", looking for similarities or differences.
Once you've assembing a good range of materials you can begin recycling paper into paper mache objects, greeting cards, paper flowers or jewellery or anything else that comes to mind. Personalized money boxes, pencil containers or other storage can be created with decorated glass jars or coffee cans. There are plenty of ideas you can suggest but to really stimulate your kids creativity and involve them fully, let them suggest their own ideas or undertake a project themselves.
Show your kids the real value of discarded items by visiting thrift stores or exploring your neighborhood recycle center.. They'll be able to see how donating old clothing, toys and other unwanted items can benefit others by re-birthing as something else of value.
Composting To Teach About Sustainability
Composting is a great way for children to become aware of the existence of and learn about the importance of micro-organisms - the little creatures we can't see - and their role in maintaining a healthy planet. Creating a heightened awareness of the invisible world of microscopic organisms helps kids see that our actions have real consequences in the natural world that we can't at first see.
Let your children help with emptying the kitchen compost container into the outside compost bin, perhaps making it one of their routine chores so they can observe the shrinking and changes that take place. Whichever method of composting you use, when you've got finished compost make it a real event to spread the material around plants and monitor the results.
Online Games To Keep It Interesting
Learning to protect the natural environment and live a more sustainable lifestyle doesn't need to be boring.... Children like interactive games with color and sound and learn very rapidly while playing those games. On the web, you can find hundreds of interesting and engaging games that teach awareness of the the natural environment for any age group. Here's a list of some popular websites that are a real hit with kids:
OlliesWorld.com - Australian sustainability website for kids and teachers.
Ecokids.ca - An award winning Canadian website with games for kids and resources for educators.
Eekoworld see: pbskids.org/eekoworld/ -
Ecokids.co.nz - A great Kiwi site for kids
Webrangers.us - an online version of the National Park Service Junior Ranger Program
Earthmatters4kids.org - excellent environmental education site with high quality teacher's resources.
Clearly there are dozens of creative ways to teach children how to appreciate the natural environment and live more sustainably.. But remember, as parents, the most potent teaching method at our disposal to teach sustainability is to lead by example and be involved ourselves.
Where can I buy a countertop compost pail?
I want to buy a small container for kitchen scraps for my compost pile outside. I don't want to buy online - does anyone know a retail store that sells them?
I'm in the US, Tennessee.
Old fashioned hardware stores carry small metal rubbish cans with lid that work quite well for compost. You can also check with a feed or farm store.
As for myself, I use an old ceramic bean pot with lid for my compost ~ this was picked up in a thrift store for about $1. Thrifts are full of ceramic cannisters which are ideally suited for counter top compost storage.
