Look After Your Feet with the Right Footwear
A huge number of people are plagued by foot problems for one key reason. Shoes that just don't fit properly.
Blisters, neuromas and aching joints will all be alleviated by footwear that fits. It is important to select shoes that fit well as this is important for foot function and health.
Every day we will each take around 10,000 steps with our feet absorbing repeated impacts and supporting our whole body weight. Our feet need to adapt to the surface we are walking on each time they come into contact with the ground. The foot will then become tense as it propels the body forward. There are just loads of shoes designed to repeatedly withstand this cycle. For example, walking shoes will often have very strong rigid soles that are good for even the roughest terrain.
One thing that many people overlook when buying shoes is how much their feet can swell during the day. The main cause of swelling is gravity. If you are in a line of work that keeps you on your feet all day you will probably be painfully aware of how much your feet can swell during the course of the day. As liquid is drawn toward your feet by gravity then your footwear will become increasingly tight and uncomfortable. You can lessen foot swelling by putting the feet up periodically throughout the course of the day.
Obviously, if your shoes are already tight they wil only get tighter and increasingly uncomfortable as the day progresses. Shoes that are simply too small are guaranteed to give you pain. Ideally we should all have our feet regularly sized. So when shopping for shoes be certain to make an allowance for the swelling that will inevitably take place. As a rough guide, try to allow about a fingers width of space, inside the shoes, in front of your big toes.
These days many people shop for clothes and shoes online. Not trying on shoes before buying them can lead to problems as sizes can vary greatly between manufacturers. The trick is to try on the shoes that you want in a shoe store before buying them online. This technique will not win favour with your local shoe stores but at least you can be confident your chosen shoes will fit.
A well fitted pair of shoes should never need to be worn in. Shoes that are right for the job and that fit properly should feel comfortable.
Choosing the right shoes for the right job is imperative. It would be mad to attempt a marathon in a pair of six inch stilettos. In fact I think it's actually mad to attempt to stand up in a pair of six inch stilettos. But stylish footwear like this has its place. If you spend all day on your feet then choose comfortable, ideally flat lace up shoes that are generously sized.
A form of footwear that has become ubiquitous in recent years is, of course, trainers and skate shoes. There are a great variety of sports shoes in a variety of style, some designed for specific applications like jogging on concrete surfaces. Vans shoes and DC shoes are two notable brands with an excellent reputation for robustness, comfort and long life. I love trainers and I will probably be wearing a pair of DC shoes (my favourites) or Nike training shoes when I finally meet my maker. There are so many cool styles and colors available today that you shouldn't have any trouble finding some that not only fit well but look great.
Mile posts: Big Creek Triathlon update (runningtriathlons)
I recently got word from Big Creek Triathlon organizer Craig Hanken that the
triathlon, which was cancelled for the first time in its history last August,
has a tentative date for 2012. Hanken said the Olympic-distance triathlon has
a tentative date of Aug. 14. I looked and Aug. 14 is on a Tuesday. So I'm
