Style Rain Water
Choosing Rain Water Tanks
Rainwater tanks are becoming increasingly popular as people try to conserve water both for environmental reasons but also to save money. In countries like Australia this is an important consideration as water is a scarse resource and should be harvested and conserved wherever possible. Rigid above ground tanks, below ground tanks and even water bladders that can be installed in the sub-floor space under a house are just some of the many options to choose from. Which ever option you choose to go with the result is the same - free harvested water that you don't have to pay for and that will never be subject to any form of water restriction.
Tanks - Above Ground
Installing a traditional above ground rain harvesting system has numerous advantages. Compared to other methods the simplicity of the installation can reduce the cost of the initial installation which is the first thing to consider. As most of the plumbing work is more accessible any future repairs are much easier to carry out which is the second thing to consider. There is obviously a space issue which is on the negative side. There are options, even with space. For example there are tall slimline tanks that are designed to fit down the side of houses that have limited space.
Tanks - Below Ground
The main benefits with below ground tanks are that they take up no space and are out of sight. A pump is going to be required to raise the water from the tank to a useful level and this will be an added expense in the installation phase.
Water Bladders
In some ways water bladders combine the best of both worlds. They are installed between the ground and the floor under the house and so are out of site. However, they are still accessible so that any maintenance issues that arise can be addressed with relative ease.
Pressure Pumps
A pressure activated pump, when installed along side a water tank, is a really useful device. When the water flows when you press the trigger on an attached garden hose for example, this pump automatically kicks in.
Summary
An effective way of conserving water and reducing the ongoing cost of water consumption can be installing one or more rainwater tanks for your home or commercial establishment. The environment in which it is installed and the amount of space available will partly determine the style of tank that is selected.
