Sound is the form of music which is regarded to be the basic form of art; music has varying elements which are rhythm, harmony, tempo, melody and pitch. In all culture in all countries, music has varying types of vital roles, for example, entertainment, religious acts, traditions, and a lot more.
The musical culture of Spain is one of the richest in the world because of the many different influences that it has; it’s not unlike how the architectural trends in the country had been greatly shaped by different cultures throughout history. Then the Visigoths, an East Germanic tribe also came after, as well as the Jews, and also the Moors came; these greatly affected and affected Spain’s musical style and form. One music and dance art form that symbolized the Spanish tradition is the Flamenco; in fact, a lot of people often mistake it for Spain’s national dance. On the contrary, Flamenco is only known just in one part of Spain; an autonomous community in Spain called Andalusia, which is considered the largest in terms of land area in the country. However, a quick recap of the ancestry of Flamenco will show you that this couldn’t be farther from the truth; Flamenco is actually only famous in one part of Spain which is the Andalusian area.
Probably one of the main reasons why Flamenco was not so known is that it is said to have been brought to Andalusia by the gypsies which have never really been a famous group to people all over the world. You’ll find this style adapted and transformed by other countries’ music and dance technique. Flamenco also captured the intricate music and tradition of Spain; still, studying the main origin of Flamenco remains a mystery until today.
Flamenco’s roots can be found in Gypsies who have traveled through or built their home in the Andausian vicinity during those times; this region was also populated by Jews, Moors, and other persecuted and discriminated groups. Andalusia was made up of gypsies, Jews, Moors, and other nationalities that were seen to be lower class during those periods, and naturally they got no respect from the upper class people back then. Since Flamenco is being performed by the poor, upper class society and historians put in little time in recording and studying it, thus very little written records can be found about it. Also the Jews, Muslim, and Gitanos which is part the lower class were being persecuted during the Spanish Inquisition in 1492; given that they are poor, they maintained the music and dance by oral tradition as a number of them did not receive formal education and cannot write.
Researchers and historians, as well as experts our time are still trying to find out the exact origin and history of Flamenco; it’s not even sure where and how Flamenco got its name. So much so that until the present generation, many people study and perform this musical and dance style all over the world.
