How do I change my lawn into a putting green?
I would like to change my lawn to something which is good enough to use for putting practice. I am prepared to put in the necessary effort and I apppreciate it might take a few years.
At the moment there is a mixture of medium and finer grasses, and the lawn is in excellent health as I water and weed it daily.
So what do I need to do to change the type of grass to a finer one? I have read up on overseeding and it seems this is a good way to revive a tired lawn, but my lawn is in good health so can I do this to acheive the desired result?
Thanks!
Outline the putting area with spray paint on the current lawn (surely you don't want the whole lawn to be a putting green), Choose an area that gets full sun and is not a low spot.
Spray the area inside the paint lines with Round up to kill the existing grass. When dead (will take about 2 weeks and may need two or more applications), dig the dead grass out, add two to three inches of sand, dig the sand into the underlying soil.
Plant creeping bent grass ( you may have to special order this or ask a local golf course to sell you some seed). This is a special grass used on putting greens, regular lawn grasses cannot survive being cut as short as needed for putting.
You will need to cut the grass every other day, fertilize monthly, water several times a week, top dress spring nad fall, aerate yearly and treat diseases as they develop. You will get disease as keeping the grass so short is a great stress on the grass.
